Press Update: Week 8 (Part 2)

Following up this week’s press update we also have a video from the finale of the Gameplayer and Paradox Interactive game development competition. It is in swedish, but since we are in such a good mood today we have translated a section of the video for your leisure. The part in question is the interview with us and the creators of A Wikiped’s Story, and the translation can be found below.

Translation of the interview (starts at about 3:43)

Gameplayer: We are now standing outside the Game Pub (Restaurang EGO, Stockholm). The volume inside is quite high so we all probably have tinnitus at this point. We can begin with Boingo: How does it feel? You came in at a shared second place.

Peter Lübeck (BDS): It feels great. I think Flipside deserves the win, and we are not at all discouraged by this. Our future looks pretty clear to us. This was a fun opportunity and there is a lot of new things happening in our near future.

Alex Fast (BDS): This is also a very good opportunity for exposure, making connections and being interviewed by game media, such as Gamespot. That is more or less one of the primary reason to participate in these kind of events, to put yourself on the map. And I think that we have succeeded in that.

Gameplayer: You have won other competitions as well?

Peter Lübeck (BDS): Yes, we (Boingo) won two awards at the Swedish Game Awards 2008, Best Execution and Gamer’s Choice. We also received a grant from the Nordic Game Program in december for the continued development of Boingo, so we are currently working on a completely new version. The version that was in this competition was our prototype, and we are now working on the enhanced HD version.

Gameplayer: May I ask how much money you got [from the grant]?

Peter Lübeck (BDS): Well yes, it is official. It’s 300 000 danish crowns, which is about 430 000 swedish crowns (about US$ 50 000). So that’s really nice!

Gameplayer: That I understand!

Then there is an interview with the creators of a Wikiped’s Story which we cannot translate because of lack of time. If you jump ahead to 6:57 you can see the rest of the interview with us. Translation as follows:

Gameplayer: If I say that your game looks very much like Loco Roco, does that make you angry?

Peter Lübeck (BDS): Well eh, I don’t get angry that often, but I would like to say that there is a number of fundamental differences.

Gameplayer: Absolutely, I was mostly thinking about the aesthetics.

Peter Lübeck (BDS): Well, Loco Roco has very simple/clean aesthetics. We are currently focusing a lot on the art [of Boingo], developing a more detailed art style that feels more alive.
